Biography: Alberto Fujimori is a Peruvian statesman that served as President of Peru from 1990 to 2000. While many describe him as a dictator, he has also been lauded for defeating the Shining Path insurgency which had plagued Peru for so long and for restoring the country's macroeconomic stability.
A controversial figure, Fujimori's presidency ended with his fleeing to Japan in the middle of a scandal concerning corruption and human rights abuses. Despite this, even when was being prosecuted for crimes against humanity in 2008, two-thirds of Peruvians supported his leadership.
Fujimori was extradited from Japan where he faced charges for human rights violations and was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment. He was also convicted concerning a payment of $15 million from the Peruvian treasury to his former intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos.
In 2017, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski granted Fujimori a pardon but this was subsequently overturned by the Peruvian supreme court in 2018.
His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, has run for president in 2011, 2016, and 2021 elections.
