He is best known for the series of five novels, known collectively as "The Silent War," that began with Redoble por Rancas (1970). All five have been translated into more than forty languages, including English.
He died when his plane, Avianca Flight 011, crashed on approach to Madrid's Barajas Airport after striking a series of hilltops. The crash killed 181 passengers, including Uruguayan literary critic Ángel Rama and Mexican writer Jorge Ibargüengoitia.

Esta compilación, además de por un texto autobiográfico, está conformada por dos poemarios: "Las imprecaciones" (1955) y "Los adioses" (1960). El primero de temática política, con poemas logrados como "Epístola a los poetas que vendrán" y "El árbol de los gemidos" pero en que los demás se tornan repetitivos. El segundo, de temática amorosa, es un poco mejor, se siente un intento del autor por encontrar una voz más propia y contiene versos simpáticos como "Yo soy las alas con que huyes de mí" y "La hierba crece ahora en los crepúsculos donde antes sonreías".
