Not only does it show his work, but compares it to the artists that influenced him.
I love the quality of the photos and the close ups of the art is wonderful, showing great details, but THE BEST part is the section devoted to the Last Supper! It show not only the "Before" the restoration but the "After."
I was blown away at how much color and details were stripped for the "restoration". The Before shows how rich the colors were and for those who are fans of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, it really makes you wonder if that isn't a portrait of Mary.
It is really worth every penny. I am so glad I got this one. I will not be letting go of it any time soon!

Leonardo and Michelangelo are master-draftsmen of the highest order. (Durer, Rembrandt, Sargent, the list goes on...) Whatever topic they touch, sooner or later a masterpiece is born. Michel is more poetic, Leo is more scientific, but quite often artistic beauty creeps into his scientific studies and creates a synthesis of both (the 'Vitruvian man' is a perfect example: Leo never painted crucifixion, but he practically gave us the image of resurrection). Through his studies of horses for instance you can see how he experiments with the animal's motion and posture until he arrives at perfection, drawing the most beautiful horse the world has ever seen (a renaissance ferrari). He has his mode of perfection when everything he does is unique and brilliant, but when doodling without inspiration, his work can become quite mediocre as well. There is also an immaculate landscape drawing, the Valley of Arno, included in this nice book, which in my case served as a gateway of discovering the majestic Chinese art. And for that alone, Leo deserves my gratitude forever.
On the other hand, I have to mention that he was the greatest wasted talent of Western civilization. Instead of focusing solely on painting, he wasted his time developing military contraptions and drawing too many grotesque faces (at least he wasn't hungry for fame and money, which makes his activity honest and commendable). But this book makes no mistake: it creates a perfect balance between different topics Leo was into: botany, machinery, anatomy, you name it...Also, the author deserves extra credit for re-attributing the drawing of the lily. This move broke my heart, for it is one of my all time favorite drawings, but he is the expert, and it is a leap of faith that requires guts. Excellent job.
Worth purchasing and spans many different studies - from botany, to horses, to humans, to maps, to anatomy.
The book is very nicely presented, each drawing clear and with a brief description. The chapters are chronological and chart where Da Vinci was based when the images were drawn. It’s clear and comprehensive and good quality printing.
