Fall/Winter 2023 Annual Report of Giving Edition

Message from the President As a Catholic, Jesuit school, I am always mindful of the fact that our work at Bellarmine must be characterized by grace. We have received abundant blessings — both as a school and as individuals — and my response to those blessings is to offer thanks. Because I recognize that at least in my own life, those graces are in excess of anything that I might have earned — far more! From my wife and kids to my parents, to friends and co-workers and the students and families with whom I am privileged to work — I realize that I am uniquely and profoundly blessed. As a response to those blessings, and particularly during this season of the year, I say thank you. Thank you to my family of course, but also thank you to all of you for the many ways in which you lend your support to Bellarmine. Thank you to the more than 100 moms who worked together to put on this year’s 69th Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show for Tuition Assistance, held October 21. Your gift of time and love not only provided an excellent event, but also did a great deal of good to make a Bellarmine education accessible for our students. This year alone, we are giving out $6.4 million in tuition assistance to more than 27% of our students. We simply could not do that without volunteers like these, and so many of you who have made financial contributions to assist these efforts. Thank you to our teachers and coaches who give of themselves tirelessly to provide an outstanding, personal, relevant Jesuit education for our students. They are deeply invested in cura personalis – care for the whole person. They get to know their students well, and challenge them to wrestle with the big questions, figure out what they think, and work to put their talents at the service of others. And I’m grateful to Rod Jemison, our new principal this year, who has been such an amazing addition to Bellarmine! Finally, I am grateful to our students, who are the reason why we exist, and bring joy to us every day. They are funny, they are smart, they are earnest, and they are deeply good. I’m so grateful for the ways in which they care for each other, their teachers, and the less fortunate whom they serve. I’m proud of our young men, and grateful that they will be our leaders in the future. Please know how grateful I and we are for your support. God Bless you and Go Bells! Sincerely,

Chris Meyercord ’88 President

Bellarmine College Prep Magazine Fall/Winter 2023 Editor’s Note A word often used to describe Bellarmine is “community.” Indeed, Bellarmine is a very special community that extends beyond its campus; a community comprised of students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends. This edition of Bellarmine College Prep Magazine certainly reflects “community.” It is our Annual Report of Giving, a chronicle of kindness that acknowledges the many generous donors who made gifts to the school during Fiscal Year ‘23 (July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023). Our benefactors are a vital part of the Bellarmine community, as the financial resources they provide are essential to the school’s ability to provide such an outstanding and unique experience for each student. We are grateful for your support as we advance opportunities for our students. Thank you for being such an important member of the Bellarmine community.

— it is a feeling that I relish and makes me understand my duties as a principal, and more importantly, as a human being — we are men and women for and with others. On a professional note, I have been so fortunate to join a community that expects excellence in everything. There are expectations and standards that Bellarmine has created for itself, and there is excitement about the future of the school – we must continue to evolve and enhance the experience of every Bellarmine community member. As I meet people in the community, there are three questions that are often asked: What has impressed you the most about Bellarmine? No matter where I go or who I talk to, everything leads back to Bellarmine – one way or another. I have been so delighted to meet students, faculty/staff, parents, and alumni not only locally, but as far away as Nashville, TN or believe it or not, Tokyo, Japan. Bells are everywhere and are always excited to talk about their love for all things Bellarmine — loyalty, allegiance, and passion are always on display. Once you are a Bell, you are always a Bell! What has surprised you about Bellarmine? Despite the growth of the school, Bellarmine has remained a home and family. Because of the dedicated faculty/staff, passionate alumni, participatory parents, and kids who believe that they are called to Bellarmine to serve others, there is a sense of brotherhood that unties them far beyond their time at the school – everyone chooses Bellarmine.

Principal’s Office On October 17, 2006, Dennis Green – former NFL and Stanford football coach – referring to a loss to the Chicago Bears, infamously said, “They are what we thought they were.” And while my demeanor and stature are significantly different from Coach Green, when people asked me about my first few months at Bellarmine, I said with a smile: Bellarmine is who I thought it was. However, as I write this holiday message to you, I rephrase that statement: Bellarmine is much more than I had ever imagined; this place is magical! To say the least, my early tenure at Bellarmine has proven to be some of the most spiritually and professionally exciting moments in my life. As I have commented on many occasions, the major reason I chose Bellarmine was to be a part of a Catholic Jesuit community. Whether it is my chats with Father Wade or Father Cobb, or having social evenings on campus with Father Mario, Father Moodie and the scholastics, or giving the Homily for the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the ethos of St. Ignatius is so prevalent on the Bellarmine campus

2

I am excited about the future of our community and understand I am not in this alone – the Bellarmine community is always willing and ready to serve. And while I can never claim alumni status at Bellarmine, I am proud to call myself the 19th principal with true Bell DNA!! Wishing all of you a safe and wonderful Holiday Season – Go Bells!

Rod Jemison Principal

From the

What do you wish for Bellarmine? It is important that our programs continue to evolve by offering creative academic classes, that we are constantly recruiting and retaining the best faculty/staff, we are strengthening our co-curricular clubs and activities, and we are enriching our athletic teams with additional resources and latest upgrades. We must be innovative, intentional, and thoughtful so that we continue to enroll boys who understand the value and network of a Bellarmine education.

The 69th Annual Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show

The 69th Annual Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show, benefiting the Direct Tuition Assistance Fund and Tuition Assistance Endowment, was held on Saturday, October 21, with lunch and dinner shows at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The theme of this year’s show was Legendary. Special thanks to Yoyi Franco, the 2023-2024 Bellarmine Mothers' Guild president; and all Fashion Show Committee members under the leadership of Jana Blastos, chair; including Felicity Jimenez-Howard, business co-chair; Nicole Razavi, business co-chair; Jennifer Doran, production chair; Della McMillan, underwriting chair; Lanae Bays, external communications chair; Kristan Kelly, internal communications chair; Elisa Schweizer, program ad chair; Nora Campos, raffle chair; and Sherry Vlahos, treasurer. The event is an important fundraiser for the school’s Tuition Assistance program. This year more than 27 percent of Bellarmine students will be tuition assistance recipients. Acknowledgment was given to Jim Thomas ‘77 of Eli Thomas Menswear in gratitude for 47 years of providing clothing for the Fashion Show, and to Al Bacosa of Bacosa Photography who has continually donated his services for the event. The 69th Mothers’ Guild Fashion Show was directed by Russ Marcel ’91 with choreography by Pauline Locsin-Kanter. Dozens of Bells and students from other schools participated as models and dancers, and many Bellarmine student volunteers provided opportunities for guests to purchase tickets for prize drawings. Bellarmine is grateful to the parent volunteers and the more than 100 members of the Fashion Show Committee for their dedicated efforts on behalf of our students.

Ed Watson, Mike Thibault, and Dinari Brown (pictured here from left to right) were inducted into the Bellarmine Hall of Fame during a ceremony held on August 26, 2023. These distinguished individuals embody Bellarmine’s motto of being men for and with others through their extraordinary personal and professional accomplishments and significant contributions to the community.

Hall of Fame Inductees 2023 Mike Thibault ’68 was honored in the category of Athletics. Mike’s incredible basketball life goes all the way back to his time as a Bellarmine student when he spent his senior year as head coach of the Freshman B team. His career in professional basketball started with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he served as an assistant coach and director of scouting and was a member of two NBA championship teams. He then spent four seasons in the same role for the Chicago Bulls, followed by eight years as head coach and general manager of the Omaha Racers of the Continental Basketball Association. Mike returned to the NBA to be an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks for four seasons, and then in 2003, he became head coach of the Connecticut Sun of the Women’s National Basketball Association. He spent 10 seasons with the Sun before taking over head coach duties for the Washington Mystics in 2013. Mike’s teams made the postseason in 16 of his 20 seasons, he was named WNBA Coach of the Year three times, and he captured a WNBA Championship with the Mystics in 2019. He retired from coaching in 2022 with the most career victories in the history of the WNBA and continues to serve as general manager for the Mystics. Mike has been a beloved mentor to countless athletes during his career, providing guidance and support and encouraging his players to give back to their communities. His contribution to the growth of women’s basketball over the last twenty years has been immeasurable. Mike has also been an integral member of the coaching staff for USA Basketball over the last three decades, and he is the only coach in history to win an international gold medal in both men’s basketball (1993 FIBA World Championships) and women’s basketball (2008 Beijing Olympics).

Dinari Brown ’98 was recognized in the category of Humanities and Fine Arts. Dinari has used his passion for the culinary arts to help address the problem of food insecurity in Silicon Valley and make a positive difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community. His professional experience includes culinary leadership positions at the Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco and the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, followed by a fouryear stint as the Executive Chef at the San Francisco 49ers Levi’s Stadium, where he led a team of more than 350 employees and oversaw the food service efforts for Super Bowl 50. Since 2018, Dinari has served as Chief Operations Officer for Hunger at Home, a nonprofit organization that provides multiple solutions addressing food security throughout Santa Clara County. Among other programs, they partner with local convention centers, entertainment venues, hotels, and stadiums to collect excess food, which is then distributed to hungry and homeless individuals through public distributions and a network of charitable community-based organizations. These efforts result in the annual diversion of hundreds of tons of wholesome food away from landfill and helps ensure that people facing food insecurity in our community do not go hungry. Concurrently, for over a decade, Dinari has shared his expertise with aspiring chefs as a chef instructor of Culinary Arts and professor of Hospitality Management at Diablo Valley College and other institutions.

Ed Watson ’65 was inducted in the Public Service category. Ed, the proud parent of four children — including one Bellarmine alumnus and two St. Ignatius graduates — and five beautiful grandchildren, has served as a trusted attorney in the Bay Area for the last 50 years, assisting individuals and families with estate and tax planning and advising charitable and nonprofit organizations on legal matters. He is a man of tremendous faith, kindness, and humility, and he has been extremely active in his lifelong parish of Our Lady of Angels in Burlingame. Ed serves as an advisor and board member to numerous nonprofit and religious groups, including as a Scoutmaster and Eagle Award advisor for the Boy Scouts for over 15 years, member and past president of the St. Thomas More Society, an organization of Catholic lawyers in San Francisco, a current board member and past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of San Mateo County, past chairman and board member of Mercy High School, Burlingame, and advisor to the Capuchin Franciscan Order of California and its foundations. In 2005, he was awarded the Ozanam Service Medallion, St. Vincent de Paul Society's highest honor, for having demonstrated superlative service to others without seeking personal recognition or favor. Ed is a member of Bellarmine’s Fr. Pedro Arrupe Society and has worked to support educational opportunities throughout his life. As the son of a single mom, he attended Bellarmine on a scholarship provided by a generous benefactor. In 2018, he and his wife established the Ed and Liz Watson Scholarship Fund in order to provide tuition assistance to Bellarmine students being raised by single parents. He has also helped support the South American missionary efforts of his sister, Deborah Watson, and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Clifford, with the Sisters of Mercy, as well as the work of his son and daughterin-law, who have established foundations in Honduras and Oaxaca, Mexico to assist the needs of those areas.

During a ceremony held on August 8 in Washington, D.C., three representatives of Bellarmine College Prep received special recognition from the U.S. Department of Education for the school’s environmental sustainability efforts. Stephen Flowers, Bellarmine’s Green Initiatives coordinator; Ron Miller, CFO; and Patrick Adams, inaugural Green Initiatives coordinator; received the 2023 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award from Cindy Marten, deputy secretary; Loredana Valtierra, policy advisor; and Christopher Maricle and George Garcia from the California Dept. of Education. Bellarmine College Prep was among 26 schools, 11 districts, and four postsecondary institutions from across the country recognized for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impacts and costs, promote better health, and ensure effective sustainability and environmental education. Representatives from the awardees received sustainably crafted plaques and banners in recognition of their achievements. The event was sponsored by the Spencer Foundation. The honorees were named in April from a pool of candidates nominated by 18 states.

Ten Bellarmine seniors are among the more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit® Scholarship Program, which honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Bells, all of whom scored in the top 1% of PSAT takers in California, are: Samuel Arthur, Eddie Bae, Aneesh Bairagi, Saketh Dasaradhi, Gavin Griffin, Andrew Hwang, Surya Krishnapillai, Aswin Surya, Andrew Wen, and Daniel Yim. Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced the names of all Semifinalists on September 13, noting that “these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.” To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Capital Campaign Bellarmine’s campus is undergoing a significant transformation as various projects within the school’s current Capital Campaign: Legacy, Inspiration, Innovation, take shape. Among the facilities is the new Jesuit Residence, a beautiful, eight-bedroom home facing University Avenue adjacent to O’Donnell Hall. As of this publication date, members of the Bellarmine Jesuit community were preparing to move into their new home (pictured, top left), vacating their longtime former residence of Wade Hall, which will be razed to

makeway for construction of the new 21-classroom Wade Academic Center. That building will include the James A. Harville ’63 Speech and Debate Hub, the Fr. Dick Cobb, S.J. Center for Adult Spirituality, and the V. Ronald Pine ’57 Lobby. In addition, Berchmans Hall will be relocated across from its current Elm Street location into a portion of the parking lot, which will be renovated as an impressive campus entrance. When completed, Berchmans Hall will be a new Welcome Center and home to the Office of Admissions.

SPEECH & DEBATE PLAZA

The Bellarmine Campaign: Preparing Today’s Leaders for Tomorrow is in its private phase of fundraising with a $50 million goal, which includes $10 million for the endowment. The public phase of the Campaign is scheduled to begin in early 2024. A more complete look at the Campaign will be featured in the Spring/Summer edition of this publication. Meantime, information is available online at: bcp.org/capitalcampaign. Those wanting to support the Campaign are encouraged to contact Pat Arnold ’84, director of development, at parnold@bcp.org or by phone at 408.537.9226.

Justice Assembly

A Message of Kinship

Renowned Jesuit Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J. was the keynote speaker at Bellarmine College Prep’s Justice Summit assembly the morning of November 14. Fr. Boyle is the founder and director of Homeboy Industries, the world's largest gang intervention and rehabilitation program, and the former pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Los Angeles. He is the author of several books, including Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship, and The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness. Addressing students, faculty, and staff who gathered in the Patrick Wayne Valley Memorial Gymnasium for the Justice assembly, Fr. Boyle delivered a compelling keynote speech with its message of “kinship.” His remarks were delivered after two Homeboy Industries representatives, Steve Montoya and Walter Corrales, shared their respective stories of survival and the many challenges they have overcome, ranging from abuse and addiction to gangs and prison.

“... you go from here to take seriously what Jesus took serious: inclusion, nonviolence, unconditional love and kindness, and compassionate acceptance … creating a community of cherished belonging.”

“It’s the privilege of my life for 40 years to walk with gang members,” said Fr. Boyle, who later in his remarks shared that the measure of one’s compassion lies in one’s willingness to be with those on the margins. Referencing Bellarmine, Fr. Boyle said, “It’s not the place you go to, it’s the place you come from,” adding that “you go from here to take seriously what Jesus took serious: inclusion, nonviolence, unconditional love and kindness, and compassionate acceptance … creating a community of cherished belonging.” Bellarmine’s Justice theme for the year is Socioeconomic Justice, with an intersectional focus on mental health. A special day for the Justice Summit will occur in January, while activities and experiences related to the theme are being explored in multiple ways throughout the school year, with the guidance of Bellarmine’s Christian Service Program (CSP) and Partners in Mission and Ministry (PiMM). Such initiatives already experienced this year include involvement in the Safe Park program and a poverty simulation.

Kathy and Mike

ARMISTEAD 2023 President’s Award Recipients

When one spends any time with Kathy and Mike Armistead, their goodness, joy, and compassion for others are attributes one becomes aware of quickly. The Armistead family is rooted in faith, with Catholic education being a hallmark in their lives. Mike and Kathy both attended Catholic grade schools, and then Mike went on to Regis Jesuit in Colorado and Kathy to St. Francis High. Their four children all attended St. Simon School, followed by daughter, Katrina, attending Sacred Heart Prep and their three sons — George ’11, Henry ’14 and John ’18 — all Bellarmine alumni. While parents at Bellarmine, Mike was actively involved as a Dads’ Club Board member and Kathy enjoyed a variety of Bellarmine Mothers’ Guild (BMG) volunteer roles, including as the 20162017 president of BMG. Mike and Kathy were constant and welcome presences on campus, attending games or volunteering for a variety of roles. Kathy spent time working in the campus store and was a team mom for several freshman basketball teams, two varsity lacrosse teams, and one varsity football team. Currently, Kathy serves on Bellarmine’s Board of Trustees, on the Executive Board of Trustees and Development Committee for the San Francisco 49ers Academy, and on the Advancement Board for Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in San Jose. She is the past parent representative on the St. Simon Community School Council.

When asked what they find special about Jesuit education, Kathy and Mike responded, “First and foremost, instilling ‘men and women for and with others.’ Beyond that, the Jesuit's pursuit of spiritual clarity without getting hung up on dogma (whether Catholic or another organized religion); the value on intellectual pursuits ... while being fervently supportive of activities (sports, speech & debate, etc.) that help form well-rounded men and women; and social awareness — both in theory and in practice.” Kathy and Mike are ardent supporters of Bellarmine College Prep. “It's the institution and its values, but also the people at Bellarmine, from Fathers Wade and Cobb to numerous teachers and coaches, administrators, and everyone. Also, we've seen it ‘work’ for many, many boys across a large financial, social, and geographic spectrum. We want the traditions and Catholic values to continue.” The Armistead’s philosophy of life is simple: “Be people for others. Apart from that, we want to be examples for others to give back. As the world gets smaller, it's important to cross boundaries. We think this is a way to do that.” It is for these reasons, and so many more, that Bellarmine is proud to bestow upon Kathy and Mike Armistead the 2023 President’s Award.

Mike’s professional career has spanned over three decades of leadership roles in the cyber security, software development and consumer internet arenas. He is currently director of Outbound Product Management Mike & Kathy with their daughter Katrina Armistead and her fiancé Nick Crance at Google Cloud Security. Mike was formerly SVP Products at Mandiant, having joined their management team in 2020 with the acquisition Bellarmine’s 43rd President’s Award Dinner was held the evening of of Respond Software, which he co-founded and led as CEO since November 7, honoring donors who gave gifts to the school at the $2,500 2016. Previously, he co-founded Fortify Software in 2003 and President’s Club level or more. Bellarmine president Chris Meyercord ’88 acted as VP & general manager for both Fortify and ArcSight presented the Armsiteads with a specially designed and produced award business groups after the companies were acquired by HP in 2011. developed in Bellarmine’s Maker Lab by students Ben Muetzenberg '24 Prior to Fortify, Mike held executive and key product positions at and Diego Vasquez '26, under the direction of instructor David Dutton. companies that include Pure Atria (IBM Rational) and Lycos. Above is a profile of the honorees featured in the event program.

GIFTS-IN-KIND

In addition to receiving financial support, Bellarmine relies on the generosity of those who contribute non-monetary items and services, which are considered Gifts-in-Kind. This type of support results in savings to the school, allowing funds to instead be applied directly to programs and services for the benefit of our students. The following individuals and companies provided Gifts-in-Kind to Bellarmine during Fiscal Year 2022-2023.

Cross-Country The Cross Country squad entered the Fall season with 226 Bell runners eager to add another chapter to the program’s storied history. They did not disappoint, as Bellarmine raced to West Catholic Athletic league titles at all three levels. For the varsity team, it was their fourth straight WCAL Championship and their 29th overall. The Bells then capped off the season with a resounding victory at CCS Championships, led by individual champion Shrey Chettiar '25.

Football The Football program welcomed a new head coach for the 2023 season, Bellarmine alumnus and two-time Super Bowl champion David Diaz-Infante ‘82, looking to build off the momentum of a capturing CCS and CIF NorCal championships last Fall. DiazInfante and his staff transitioned the team into a new era of football with an emphasis on honoring the legacy of the past while forging their own path and building new traditions. The Bells earned the first victory for their new coach in the season opener versus MenloAtherton, and they went on to have 11 players claim All-WCAL honors.

Athletics Highlights by Kevin Saldivar '04, CAA, Director of Athletics

Water Polo Bellarmine enjoyed its most successful season in the pool in nearly a decade, finishing the season as the No. 6 ranked Water Polo team in the nation according to MaxPreps. They hosted the prestigious Memorial Cup early in the Fall, which brings the best NorCal and SoCal teams together in a two-day tournament, took home the championship with a win over Corona del Mar 13-9. The season culminated with Bellarmine toppling perennial foe Sacred Heart Prep in the title game of the WCAL Tournament to earn the Bells their first league championship since 2015.

Grand Reunion and Tailgate The Bellarmine Alumni Council kicked off the WCAL football season with the 41st annual Alumni Football Tailgate on October 6. One of the school’s longest-standing traditions and one of our largest off-campus community events of the year, the tailgate saw a tremendous turnout yet again. For the second year in a row, members of the Alumni Council partnered with Brad Barmore '00, chef and owner of KINSmoke, KIN, and The Publican Windsor, to prepare an outstanding selection of BBQ meals. The sun was still hot in the evening at San Jose City College and the grill was even hotter, as more than 800 attendees enjoyed the food and the stylings of the Bellarmine student pep band before heading into the stadium to watch the BCP varsity team play their league home opener against Riordan High School. On Saturday, October 7, Bellarmine welcomed the Classes of 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013 back to campus for our annual Grand Reunion celebration. It was the strongest turnout for Grand Reunion in several years, led by the Class of ’88 fresh off their resounding victory in the BellsGive alumni class competition this past May. The alumni in attendance celebrated Mass with Fr. Dick Cobb, S.J., in Leontyne Chapel before enjoying dinner and drinks on a gorgeous evening on the Leo J. and Mary G. Lucas Quad. There was tremendous camaraderie and Bell spirit on display, as many alumni stayed long past dark reminiscing with classmates, sharing life updates, and paging through yearbooks.

The 27th Annual Fr. Joe Costa, S.J. ’41

Alumni Bocce Tournament The 27th Annual Fr. Joe Costa, S.J. ’41 Alumni Bocce Tournament took place the evening of July 28 at Campo di Bocce in Los Gatos. More than 100 participants, with alumni spanning seven decades of Bellarmine history, were on hand as 24 teams competed for the coveted prize. Following several rounds of play, the championship trophy went to one of the youngest teams in their first time competing in the event. “Will Hackett '16, Cole Hackett '18, Tate Hackett '21, JC Zontos '18, Mike Perry '18, and Justin Weiber '18 took home the title after pulling off an impressive tournament run that included victories in the playoff bracket over multiple teams who were previous champions,” noted Steve Connolly ’04, director of alumni relations. Special thanks to presenting sponsors Brandenburg Family Foundation and Cinnabar Hills Golf Club (Bill Baron ’81); wine sponsor Calerrain Winery (Geoff Mace ’00); and court sponsors Urban Catalyst, Lonich Patton Ehrlich Policastri, Campo di Bocce of Los Gatos, and Schabilion Promos.

The Office of Alumni Relations hosted the 36th annual Bellarmine Golf Classic on Monday, October 9. More than 200 members of our community gathered for a day of fun and friendly competition at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose, including alumni representing nine decades of Bellarmine history. Special recognition goes to the Filice family (Bruno ’47, Mark ’73, Bruno Jr. ’78, and Dominic ’13), who had three generations of Bells in one foursome! This year’s championship trophy went to Ian Calip ’88, Pat Crema ’88, Dennis Namimatsu ’88, and Dennis Ventry ’88, who capped off their reunion weekend with the low round in the four-person scramble. Although nobody won a Jeep with a hole-in-one, participants enjoyed an array of course enhancements, complimentary Neto’s sausages at the turn, and the chance to interact with the student volunteers from BCP’s varsity golf team. Thanks to our generous sponsors, the tournament raised approximately $40,000 to benefit the Direct Tuition Assistance Fund.

Beneficiary Designations: Make sure your assets end up in the right hands by Bill Colucci, Esq. ’82, Director of Planned Giving

Updating beneficiary designations is a crucial step in the estate planning process. It ensures that certain of your assets are distributed to the people you intend to receive them. Beneficiary designations are often overlooked, and many people believe that they are covered by their wills or trusts. However, that is not always the case, and failure to update beneficiary designations can lead to unintended consequences. The following will discuss the importance of updating beneficiary designations for an estate plan. WHAT ARE BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS? Beneficiary designations are forms that allow you to name a person or an entity to receive your assets upon your death. This method of distributing assets is especially helpful in streamlining the process of passing along assets upon your death. You can designate beneficiaries for various types of assets including life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and bank or brokerage accounts. Beneficiary designations are a critical aspect of estate planning because they supersede any instructions in your will or trust. This means that if your beneficiary designation conflicts with your will or trust, the beneficiary designation will control. WHY ARE BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS IMPORTANT? Updating beneficiary designations is important for several reasons. First, if you fail to name a beneficiary or if your named beneficiary predeceases you, your assets will pass through your estate. The upshot here is that assets you thought would pass directly to an heir now will be subject to probate, which can be time-consuming and expensive. Probate can also delay the distribution of your assets, leaving your loved ones in a difficult situation. By naming a beneficiary, you can ensure that your assets pass directly to your intended recipient, avoiding probate. Second, beneficiary designations can help you avoid unintended consequences. For example, suppose you have a life insurance policy that you purchased years ago when you were single or did not have a family. If you do not update the beneficiary designation after a change in marital or family status, the person you named long ago as your beneficiary may still receive the proceeds of the policy upon your death. This

is because beneficiary designations supersede any instructions in your will or trust. Updating beneficiary designations is a simple way to avoid unintended consequences and ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. HOW TO UPDATE BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS Updating beneficiary designations is a relatively simple process. First, you should review your beneficiary designations periodically, especially after major life events such as a change in marital status or the birth of a child or grandchild. You should also review your beneficiary designations if you have changed jobs or if the financial institution holding your account has merged with another company. To update your beneficiary designations, you should contact the financial institution holding the asset and request a beneficiary designation form. You will need to provide your personal information and the information of your named beneficiary. You should also review the form carefully to ensure that you have named the correct beneficiary and that the form is completed correctly. You also want to keep in mind the amounts or percentages you are authorizing for your beneficiaries. Once you have completed the form, you should submit it to the financial institution. It is also important to keep beneficiary information (names and contact information) up to date as locating beneficiaries after you have passed can sometimes be difficult for the person who is handling your estate (usually your trustee or executor). The beneficiaries do not need to be told about the gift, but it is helpful to leave a note for your trustee or executor so that those assets can be distributed promptly.

CONCLUSION Updating beneficiary designations is a critical aspect of estate planning. Beneficiary designations allow you to name a person or entity to receive your assets upon your death and ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. Failure to update beneficiary designations can lead to unintended consequences, including delays in the distribution of your assets and the distribution of your assets to unintended recipients. By reviewing your beneficiary designations periodically and updating them as necessary, you can ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. As you review your beneficiaries and overall estate plan, please consider including Bellarmine as a beneficiary of your estate. Doing so may benefit your heirs in addition to achieving your legacy and charitable goals. Please get in touch with us if you have questions. BONUS CONTENT: Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) are a great way to help Bellarmine and reduce your taxable income as well. If you are 70 ½ years old and are subject to required minimum distributions from your retirement account, you can take advantage of a QCD by asking your IRA custodian to deliver those funds directly to Bellarmine (usually by December 31st). By doing so, you take care of three things: you meet your RMD requirement, you reduce your taxable income, and, most importantly, you help Bellarmine in its mission to educate and form young men of conscience, competence, and compassion. MISSION STATEMENT

Bellarmine College Preparatory is a community of men and women gathered together by God for the purpose of educating the student to seek justice and truth throughout his life. We are a Catholic school in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus. As such, our entire school program is dedicated to forming “Men For and With Others” – persons whose lives will be dedicated to bringing all their God-given talents to fullness and to living according to the pattern of service inaugurated by Jesus Christ.
