Will There Be a Super Smash Bros. 6? Most Likely
There was a lot of talk around the possibility of Super Smash Bros. 6 once Creator and Director Masahiro Sakurai announced that Ultimate was not getting any more updates, including balancing. Would this really be the end of Smash? Most were not convinced. Would Nintendo really not capitalize on the popularity of the Smash series? Would Sakurai actually rest?
At first, many gamers speculated that Ultimate would be the end. At E3 back in 2018, Sakurai apparently said the same thing. Others noted how Ultimate had “everybody” on the roster, making it seem like a celebration of the series. This left some prominent Smash players like Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma wondering about an Ultimate port with new DLC.
This all changed in the summer of 2023.

After “retiring” from Ultimate, Sakurai started making YouTube videos showing some behind-the-scenes stuff about his popular games, including Kirby and Smash.
While he didn’t outright say that Super Smash Bros. 6 was confirmed, he had gamers feeling a lot more positive. At one point he stated: “Smash Bros. is a massive, important title for Nintendo so it's fair to assume there will be another one at some point, but it’s going to take some work to figure out exactly how to make that happen."
Sakurai also noted that he’d be involved in some way. This comes as no surprise since Sakurai is known as the man who never rests. It’s impossible to imagine him standing back and watching others working on Smash without his input.

Since then, the Smash community has been excitedly whispering about the possibility of another Smash but it was largely silent from Nintendo’s end. Then, Source Gaming claimed on X that Bandai Namco has rebranded its Nintendo-based team to “Studio 2/Studio S.” The report added that the new team has added Mario Kart 8 DX, Tour, and Smash Ultimate to the studio.
On top of that, the team is looking for new hires. The job listing read: “At S Studio, you will be responsible for developing consumer games that will be commissioned by Nintendo and BANDAI NAMCO. Studio 2/S Studio is a studio that specializes in contracted development projects within the company.”
This made a lot of gamers think of Smash. And it became an even bigger possibility when the description also added that an upcoming game is of the “side view” variety, which Smash also is.
The Smash community is pretty sure that a new Smash is in the works. But when it actually comes out is anyone’s guess. Maybe on the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever the next console is?
