Peruvian President Alan Garcia has honored outgoing Cabinet chief Jose Antonio Chang Escobedo with the country’s highest accolade, the Order of the Sun.

Chang, who also served as education minister, received the award prior to the swearing-in ceremony of new Prime Minister Rosario Fernandez Figueroa and Education Minister Victor Raul Diaz Chavez.

Chang Escobedo served as education minister since the beginning of President Garcia's term in office in July 2006 and was appointed prime minister in September 2010.

According to a document accompanying the award, Chang was recognised for his "invaluable contribution to the improvement of education in Peru during his tenure over the past four years."

The document also praises Chang for his efforts to promote meritocracy, curriculum improvement and training policies for teachers across the country.
