About 2 million 850 Education Guides will be handed out to every house in Peru between June and July 2008, the minister of Education, José Antonio Chang, reported Monday after a ceremony to present this handbooks with president Alan García at the Government Palace.

President García assured that the Education Guide is a fundamental and extraordinary step to improve the educational quality since it will support the eradication of analphabetism, the delivery of computers and evaluations to the teachers.

He stated that this handbook explains in detail which fundamental contents must be learned by the kids each semester according to their corresponding educational level.

“The purpose of the guide is that parents know exactly how to help their children, how to monitor their education every week and every day, but they must also demand and verify if they are obtaining the necessary contents”, he said.

García added that if parents don’t know what their children should be learning, then they can’t help, stimulate, or demand them. Therefore, from now on they will know what are they supposed to learn with this handbook, and also verify the educational progress of their children.

RECOMMENDATIONS ARE WELCOME

President García stated that the handbook, which will be handed out to every house of the country, may be improved thanks to the recommendations given by the parents and specialists, but highlighted that this is a positive step for educational modernization.

“This is an important tool. It may be corrected, improved and will surely be criticized, but the Ministry of Education is the one who thought about this. Every opinion and critics which may help to improve this handbook are welcome, and therefore we may connect and involve the parents with the child’s education”, said the president.

He added that the next step is to hand over a new curriculum and the new contents which are aimed to give our education a more scientific, practical, and understanding approach which will demand the use of knowledge and will enable us to have citizens from the future.

He congratulated the Ministry of Education since it hasn’t been dedicated to construct educational palaces without contents, but “it’s creating the educational spirit and content of the future”.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

Chnag said that once these guides are delivered some workshops for teachers and parents will be organized aiming to follow up the application of the Education Guides at schools.

He stated the purpose of this guide is that parents can get closer to schools so as they can supervise their children learning.

He said that, so far, parents have only be involved in supervising educational infrastructure and teachers’ assistance, but not in the national curricula.

“The purpose of this is to provide parents accurately the minimum contents, knowledge and competences that must be learned during the school year and all this is according to every thing that has been done so far”, the minister stated.
