FAN ATTACHMENT.
v Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 8, 1912. Serial in. 729,324.
To whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, ALTER L. SoHwARrz- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreve' ort, in the parish of Caddo and State of uisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments, of which the following is a specification. a
An object of theinvention is to provide an attachment for fans, such as electric fans commonly employed to circulate the air, to deflect the currents of air to the side and rear of the fan Without destro ing the currents of air thrown forwardly rom the front face of the fan. i
The invention embodies, among other features,'a member preferably formed of a single piece of material and which is attached to one of the petals of a fan, one member being provided for each petal and arranged so that when the'fan is rotated the rotation of the member with thefan will cause the same to circulate currents of air rearwardly and to the sides of the fan.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refer- "ence'denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
'Figure 1 is a perspective view looking at the rear face of a petal of a fan, showing my device, applied thereto; Fig. 2-is a perspective view looking at the front face of the petal of the fan, shown in Fig. 1; and Fig.
3 is a" erspective view of the device 're-' moved rom the petal of the fan; Fig. 4'is a fragmentary enlarged perspective view showing the manner of attachin the upper, portion of the member'to one o the petalsof the fan.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a member I 10 preferably stamped or formed from a' single piece of material and including a deflecting plate 11 provided with an integral head 12 having a slot. 13 therein, the said head being formed at the upper end otthe plate 11 and the lower end of the plate being provided witha. forwardly extending shank 14 terminating in attaching members 15.
The member 10 is applied to a petal 16 of" a rotary'fa'n by placing the member on the. rear face of the petal with a portion of the petal received in the slot 13 inthe head 12, a notch; 17 being formed in the petal to secure the head 12 in position on the upper end thereof, after which the attaching members 15 are bentaround the edges of the petal, thus securing the lower end of the deflecting plate 11 rigid relatively to the petal, an integral flange 18 being formed with the head 12 adjacent the slot 13 thereot the petal to space the deflecting plate 11 from the petal, as shown. When the member 10 is secured to the petal 16 in the manner mentioned, it will be seen that the deflecting plate 11 is slightly to one side of the longitudinal plane of the petal and it will be readilyv seen that when the fan having the members 10 mounted on the petals 16'thereof is rotated, the rotation of the fan proper will not only distribute the air in front of the fan but by reason of the provision of the members 10 it will also distribute the air to the sides of the fan and in the rear of the same, thus forming currents of air so that persons standing on both sides of the fan and in the rear ofthe same will receive the cooling currents of air, as well as persons standing in front of the fan.

of and adapted to abut against the rearlface Having thus described my invention, I
scribed compgising a single piece of mate'- rial bent to form a deflecting plate terminating at one end thereof in a slotted head having an integral flange adjacent ithe slot thereof, the said plate terminating at the other end thereof in a laterally extending shank terminating in integral attaching I members.
2. In combination with the petal of a fan,
a deflecting plate, a head formed with thedeflectin'gplate and provided with a slot in which the upper end of the petal is received,
the said petal being notched to receive a portion ofthe said head adjacent the end of the said slot, a flange formed on the said head to space the deflecting plate from the said petal at the upper end thereof, ashank on the lower end of the said deflecting plate, and attaching members extended from the said shankito engage the petal and secure the lower end of the deflecting plate rigidly relatively to the petal, the said shank being extended laterally from the said deflecting plate to space the lower .end of the deflecting plate from the petal.
- 3.- In a device of the character described, the combination with a petal, of a deflecting plate adapted to be supported on the said and means on the lower end of the said de- 10 petal, and means for securing the said defleeting plate for securing't-he same to the fleeting plate rigidly on the said petal. said petal and in spaced relation thereto.
