Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL STANSOHUS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindotors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wind motors and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which power may be supplied for various purposes; and with this and other objects in view the in vention consists in a motor of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved wind motor, complete; Fig. 2 a front view of the top portion of the motor and looking in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a plan view of the top portion of the motor; and, Fig. 4 a side view of the top portion of the motor and showing a modification.
In the practiceof my invention, asshown in the drawing, I provide an upright frame or support a which may be of any preferred construction and of any desired height and on the top of which is rotatably mounted the motor proper as shown at b.
In the construction of the motor proper, I provide a central rectangular casing 0 which is preferably square in cross section and the bottom of which is provided with a bearing plate d between which and a corresponding plate (21 with which the frame or support a is provided are placed ball bearings 0Z Passing centrally and vertically through the casing 0 is a shaft e which passes downwardly through the central portion of the frame or support a and said shaft 6 is provided centrally of the casing 0 with a beveled gear wheel 6 Secured in the back end of the casing c is a transverse board or partition f having central transverse supports 7, and between the board or partition f and the shaft (2 is a spider support 9, and mounted in the supports f and g is a central shaft 7 provided at its *frontend with a beveled gear wheel k which meshes with the wheel 6 and the shaft It is also provided with a wind wheel 9 having blades g, and the partition f is provided with a large circular opening f the diameter of which is the same as that of the wind wheel g The front end of the casing c is provided with a bell-shaped extension 2' composed of side members 2' and top and bottom members i in which are respectively placed, central doors 2' and 2' which are hinged at i to the front end of the casing 0, and the rear end of the casing c is provided with a bellshaped extension 7' composed of side members 7' and top and bot-tom members and the top member 7' is provided. with a central door j hinged to the rear end of said casing at 7'.
The doors. 2' and 2' in the front bellshaped extension 2" of the casing 0 and the door 7' in the top of the rear bell-shaped extension 7' of said casing are intended to regulate and' control the passage of air through said casing and the operation of the wind wheel 9 and in the accompanying drawing I have shown means for manipulating or operating said doors. Connected with the front edge of the bottom door i at is is a cord k which is passed around a pulley 70 in the top of the front end of the casing 0 and then around a pulley 70 at the front edge of the top of the bell-shaped extension 2', and which is then secured to the front edge of the top door 2' of said bell-shaped extension at k from which point the cord 7% passes through or around a pulley 76 secured to the top of the rear end portion of the casing c and thence to and around a pulley 70 secured centrally to the outer edge of the top portion of the rear bell-shaped extension after'which said cord is secured at 70 to th front edge of the door 7' and then passed downwardly through the bottom part 7' of the said bell-shaped extension 7' at 70 from which point said cord is freely suspended and may be. manipulated to raise the bottom door 2' of the front bell-shaped extension 2' so as to close or partially close the front end ofthe casing 0, and also to swing the" top door 2' of said extension backwardly, and to close or partially close the top door of the bell-shaped extension j, all as clearly shown and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and by means of this operation of'said doors the flow of air through the casing 0 may be regulated as will be readily understood. The folding backwardly of the top. door i of the front bell-shaped extension 2' is for permitting the air topass freely through the top portion of said bell-shaped extension, and the closing or partial closing of the bottom door 2' also permits air to pass through the bottom part of'said bell-shaped extension, and I also provide means whereby when the wind is very strong, the side doors i of the bell shaped extension 2' will be automatically opened and the wind permitted to pass therethrough. This means consists of cords m secured to the said side doors i at m and passed around pulleys m on the central front edge portion of the sides 2' of said bell-shaped extension, and these cords are suspended freely from the pulleys m and are provided with weights m which normally hold the doors i closed, but when the wind is strong these doors will be automatically opened as will be readily understood and the air or wind will thus be free to pass through the side portions of said bell-shaped extension 2' and when the wind decreases in force the weights m will close said doors. A weight n is also suspended from the free edge of the bottom door i of the bell-shaped extension i by means of a cord n and when the doors 7: in the top and bottom of said bell-shaped extension 1', and the door j of the rear bellshaped extension j, have been opened or manipulated as hereinbefore described by the cord 7%, the weight n will serve to return said doors to their normal position.
The chief object of the front bell-shaped extension z' of the casing c, as will be understood, is to collect the air and direct it through said casing c for the purpose of operating the wind wheel 9 and the chief object of the rear bell-shaped extension j of said casing is to form a vacuum at the rear end of the casing 0 so as to add to the force of the wind or air passing through said casing.
The shaft 6 is provided, in the construction shown, with a bearing 0 in the bottom or base a of the frame or support a, and said shaft, in the form of construction shown, is composed of two parts, the bottom part 6 being connected with the top part of said shaft by a spring clutch device p composed of top and bottom parts and 10 the top member being vertically movable and provided with a spring 29 by which it is normally depressed, and said members 19 and p being provided with teeth which interlock when the top portion of said shaft is turned in one direction, whereby if the movement of the top portion of said shaft is stopped or quickly reversed, the clutch will operate so as to prevent the reversal of the movement of the bottom part of said shaft.
It will be understood that while the shaft e is turned by the wheel 9 the casing e is free to rotate on said shaft and the provision of the spring clutch device 7) is to accommodate the shaft to any quick reversal of the movement of the casing 0 caused by a change in the direction of the wind, and said casing c is also provided with a vane 1 whereby the front end of said casing is held to the wind in the usual manner.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown the shaft 6 or the bottom part thereof geared in connection with the shaft 8 of a corn sheller 25, but it will be understood that my invention is not limited to any particular use of the shaft 0, nor any particular means for connecting said shaft, with any machine or apparatus to be operated thereby.
In Fig. l I have shown a modified c011- struction for operating the side doors a of the front extension i of the casing c which consists of toggle links to and u pivoted, respectively, to the casing 0 at a to the side doors 7? at a and pivotally connected at u. The pivotal connections at u and u are uni versal connections or joints of any well known construction and the combined length of the link members to and M2 is greater than the distance between the pivotal points a and u" when the doors 2' are closed, and the pivotal connection at a of the link members u and M2 is above a horizontal line drawn between the points a and a and suspended from the said pivotal connection at u are weights u". With this construction the doors i will open when the wind pressure reaches a predetermined point and when said wind pressure decreases, the weights u will close said doors, as will be readily understood, but my particular invention is also not limited to any particular means for operating the doors in the front extension 2' of the casing 0 nor the top door the back extension j, and any suitable devices or apparatus may be provided for this purpose.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wind motor of the class described, a rotatable casing open at both ends, a shaft passing vertically through said casing and rotatable independently thereof, and a wind wheel mounted in the rear end portion of said casing and geared in connection with said shaft, the front end portion of said casing being provided with a bell-shaped extension having in the top and bottom and sides thereof, doors which are hinged to said casing, means for manipulating the bottom door to close the front end of said I casing, and means for opening and closing the other doors, the bell-shaped extension at the rear end of said casing being also provided in the top thereof with a door which is hinged to the rear end of said casing and which is operated by the same means that operates the door in the bottom of the bellshaped extension at the front end of said casing.
2. In a wind motor of the class described, a rotatable casing open at its front and rear ends, a shaft passing vertically through said casing and rotatable independently thereof, and a wind wheel mounted in the rear end portion of said casing and geared in connection with said shaft, said casing being also provided at the front end thereof with a bell-shaped extension in the top, bottom and side portions of which are doors hinged to said front end of said casing, and the rear end of said casing being also provided with a bell-shaped extension in the top of which is a door hinged to the rear end of said casing, means connected with the top and bottom doors in the bell-shaped extension at the front end of said casing and with the top door in the bell-shaped extension at the rear end of said casing for operating said doors, and means for operating the doors in the sides of the bell-shaped extension at the front end of said casing.
3. In a wind motor of the class described, a support, a casing mounted horizontally and rotatably on said support and both ends of which are open, a shaft passing vertically through said support and vertically and centrally through said casing, and on which said casing is rotatable, and a wind wheel M Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the mounted in one end of said casing and geared in connection with said shaft, said casing being also provided at both ends with bell shaped extensions, the bell shaped extension at the front end being provided in the sides and bottom and top thereof with hinged doors, and the bell shaped extension at the rear end of said casing being provided at the top thereof with hinged doors and means for opening and closing said doors.
4. In a wind motor of the class described, a support, a rotatable casing mounted on said support and open at both ends, a shaft passing vertically and centrally through said support and said casing and rotatable independently of said casing, a wind wheel mounted in the rear end portion of said oasing and geared in connection with said shaft, the front end portion of said casing being provided with a bell shaped extension having in the'top, bottom and sides thereof, doors which are hinged to said casing, means for manipulating one of said doors to close the front of said casing, and means for opening and closing the other doors.
