Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a protective helmet for motorcyclists of the type mentioned in the preamble of claim 1 and made known by US-A-4 075 714.
In the protective helmet disclosed in US-A-4075714, the transverse ribs are arranged in sections adjacent to one another at the top thereof, each of which, as shown in FIGS. 3a to 3c, has a sawtooth-shaped cross-sectional profile. The well-known protective helmet serves to protect the head of an aircraft occupant when ejected from the aircraft, whereby a lift is generated by the air layer flowing over the top of the helmet. This is reduced by designing the cross ribs as a sawtooth profile and also arranging holes in it. Thus, the transverse ribs present on the known protective helmet serve a different purpose than the transverse ribs or transverse grooves provided on the protective helmet according to the invention.
Furthermore, the aerofoil of an aircraft, which emerges from US Pat. No. 4,354,648, has on its upper side a plurality of short profiled strips which are arranged in sections next to one another and in two or three rows one behind the other. Air swirls are generated by the profile strips in their area on the surface of the wing.
A motorcyclist usually keeps his head tilted more or less deeply at different vehicle speeds for aerodynamic or habitual reasons, whereby of course his protective helmet also takes on correspondingly different inclinations. However, this results in changed air flow angles on the protective helmet and thus different sized air resistances. Especially in the case of a strongly inclined head posture of the motorcycle rider, due to the smooth helmet surface of a well-known motorcycle rider protective helmet, the air flow acting on the rear of the helmet tears off considerably below the highest helmet curvature area, as a result of which an air flow flowing over the rear of the helmet towards the lower edge of the helmet has been formed. Since this coincides with an air flow flowing up over the back of the motorcyclist to his neck as well as with an air flow that flows obliquely upwards and backwards over his shoulders, wind turbulence and cross currents create a wind pressure on his neck, which is particularly stressful during, especially during after a long motorcycle ride is very tiring.
For this reason, according to an older German utility model application, republished as DE-U-8 316 411, a protective helmet has been proposed, the entire surface of which is provided with dome-shaped depressions arranged next to one another. The provision according to the invention of transverse ribs or transverse grooves with a rectangular cross-sectional profile on a protective helmet is new.
The object of the invention is to design a protective helmet according to the preamble of claim 1 such that an air stream flowing approximately tangentially along the helmet tip at the highest curvature area of the helmet tip is reliably separated by suitable designs on the latter, and is thereby independent of the respective inclination position of the motorcycle driver's head, so that it cannot flow to the lower edge of the helmet.
- Due to the transverse ribs or transverse grooves having a rectangular cross-sectional profile according to the invention, the air flow acting on the protective helmet at its upper region is separated at the highest curvature region of the helmet tip, that is to say in the region of an inflow direction which is approximately tangential to the latter. This air flow, which flows approximately horizontally through the rectangular-shaped cross ribs or cross grooves, combines with the air flow that flows obliquely up and back over the shoulders of the motorcycle rider and with the air flow flowing up the back of the motorcycle in the area of the helmet tip - the individual air flows to a certain extent as «force vectors act -, so that the neck area of the motorcycle rider is relieved of the wind pressure comparatively considerably by the upward, to the helmet tip shifted confluence of air currents.
This significantly reduces fatigue in the neck area of the motorcycle rider, especially in the medium speed range (120 to 140 km / h). In addition, continuous top speeds can be increased considerably. Due to the transverse ribs or transverse grooves designed according to the invention, the air resistance in all riding positions and the resulting different head positions of the motorcyclist, that is to say also in motorcycles with racing handlebars or touring handlebars, is largely the same. The transverse ribs or transverse grooves can also advantageously be provided practically without additional costs when a protective helmet is manufactured. Finally, cross ribs on an existing safety helmet can also be retrofitted at low cost.
Vorteilhafte Weiterbildungen sind den Unteransprüchen zu entnehmen.Advantageous further developments can be found in the subclaims.
The transverse ribs or transverse grooves are expediently each about 1 to 2 mm high or deep and about 4 to 8 mm wide (features of Pa claims 2 and 3).
The tearing off of the air stream flowing to the helmet tip can be promoted in that the transverse ribs are formed in sections, with one transverse rib section covering a gap in the adjacent row of transverse ribs (feature of patent claim 4).
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing, which is explained below.
The motorcycle driver's helmet 1 shown in the drawing is designed as an integral helmet and has a
The protective helmet 1 has in the area of the helmet tip 6 a number of
By means of the
