No, actually I meant we produce 25% of the worlds developed resources. That is, our ingenuity, knowledge and charity has helped much of the world develop its economy to the point that it can produce enough resources to fill our need. The world only produces at the current level to fill the need of the market and right now we represent 25% of that need. We pay the way for 25% of the world economy, and thank God we do! If we were to cut back our usage to the 5% (of the world resource) as many would hope, we would crush much of the worlds economy causing millions to starve and be thrust into poverty as the world economy contracts to 80% of its current size. If however, as other countries become more developed then surely our 25% will be reduced as the world economy grows to 125, 150, or even 200% of its current size. In doing so demand for new technologies will result in changes in the types (but never the quantity) of energy we and the world uses to meet the new demand. This is the common knowledge you speak of, not the, we have reached our maximum capacity and must now pay some artificial piper and starve the world. The future is bright. Let's help other people achieve our level of development instead of depriving them of access to our markets by artifically contracting them.

David- I think what you meant to say is we comprise 5% or the world's population but USE 25% of the world's resources. That's the problem. We help others develop so that we can use their resources. Sorry but that's a fact. We don't produce anything anymore which is why we are in the financial situation we are in. This is pretty common knowledge.

The feed for my area includes one actual volunteer opportunity and a ton of scarcely related Meetup and Craigslist links. (Fashion? Backyard poultry? Clinical trials?) There are smarter tools out there - please use some of those rather than just using the keyword "volunteer" as a search on the major sites.

The US comprises about 5% of the world population but we produce more than 25% of the worlds resources (at home and abroad). We give (as individuals, not at the force of our government) far more in charity than any other nation. We help others not just through our charity but also through our industry and in helping others develop their own industrial capability even in our consumption. It is good an right that we should give back through charity and volunteering but it is a gross distortion of the facts to say that it must be done out of guilt for lack of a track record of having done so. It should be done out of thankfulness that we have been given so much and that we work to remain in a position to give back.

This is a great gadget. However, posts like "We earn some of what we have- and steal a lot more Eric Smith - Sep 14, 2009" just turn me off. I don't like being grouped in with "we". I don't steal anything. I've earned everything I have. Eric is referring to government officials, of which I did not vote for. If you really want to get people to help, don't beat them with a 90's message about how bad they are. I help because it needs to be done - not because I feel guilty about something.

Actually, we do not earn (all) of what we have- we steal much of it: The US comprises about 4.75% of the world population (figuring the world pop'n at about 6.3 bn and the US pop'n at about 300 mn)yet we use more than 25% of the world resources- squeezing out others who can't afford to build military bases in countries that pump oil out of the ground. If we shared equally, we'd use a lot less plastic- we'd use it judiciously, we'd have developed alternative energy to a much more substantial level decades ago, and so on. But we discovered it was cheaper to support corrupt middle east regimes and wheel and deal with those leaders at the expense of those countries populations and at the expense of the populations of other oil-importing countires- like China and India (whose combined pop'ns add up to about one third of the world pop'n).

I am always amazed and saddened when people take offense to sharing and being of service to their community. We all have parents or someone that cared for us at some point; this is what paing back is all about. Without the kindess of other's we are doomed as a people. Wake up and open your hearts to love and kindness. We can can have peace on earth if we want it. Want it, feel it, be the breathe of change.

Thanks for the nice free tool to help people find ways to help other people. I can understand some people being too cold and cynical to help others. It's really sad when they complain about people helping others. I hope they feel better soon, but I'm glad "I earned what I have!" won't be needing any help from anyone.

Are people actually complaining that this is advertising all over their home page and they can't ignore it? I don't know if it was just me, but it was a tiny link at the top corner of the page that was barely noticeable under my theme. I clicked on it because I do want to find volunteer opportunities. People who are mad about this need to surgically remove the stick that's up their asses.

I tried this gadget out and I think it is fantastic. The advertisement on the main page is not that obtrusive. I think I am actually going to do some volunteer work. We should all help one another. We really help ourselves in the end.
